LOCAL 'K2' BANS PROBABLY NOT IN THE WORKS

Monday, December 6th, 2010 -- 11:18 AM

A number of municipalities around the state and the country have passed local laws banning synthetic marijuana. So far, Clark County and the City of Neillsville aren?t among them, but it appears to be a moot point.

The fake pot is sold under the brand names "K2,"?Spice,??Blaze,? and ?Red X Dawn?. Many times it?s labeled as incense and ?not for human consumption,? but the chemical combination was developed in Europe as a synthetic way to replicate the high from smoking marijuana.

Acting under emergency rules, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will ban K2 within the next couple weeks. The substance will be classifies it in a category on par with heroin.

Lt. Jeff Parker with the Clark County Sheriff?s Department says authorities don?t know of any stores selling K2 in the county. They did have one case a few weeks ago where a male subject had to be taken to the ER after mixing it with marijuana. He was cited for having drug paraphernalia.
