INSPECTOR: CLARK CO. JAIL UNDERSTAFFED
Friday, October 15th, 2010 -- 9:41 AM
Clark County will have some big decisions to make about their jail operation.Brad Hompe, a Detention Facilities Specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, spoke to the Law Enforcement Committee yesterday.
While he gave jail staff credit for running a good facility, he said the county has understaffed the 126-bed facility.
The county currently has 23 jail employees. A facility of that size should have over 27 staff members. Plus, some of the jail staff doubles as dispatchers.
Hompe said the county was ?treading on pretty thin ice? and could be opening itself up to liability issues.
As of January 1st, Clark County?s facility will no longer house inmates from Portage County. Hompe says that won?t reduce the amount of staff needed to follow guidelines.
It will reduce jail revenues by an estimated $425,000.
