AREA TEACHERS HONORED

Thursday, October 7th, 2010 -- 11:37 AM

Two-dozen of the area?s top teachers were recognized last night for their contributions to education. The Marshfield Chamber Foundation held its 8th annual Crystal Apple Awards Celebration at the Holiday Inn.

18 educators were honored as Teachers of Distinction, and four were given top honors as the 2010 Crystal Apple Award Winners. They included retired Nasonville Elementary fifth and sixth grade science teacher Wayne Jellish.

"The 40 years I taught were just awesome. I never looked at it like a job. I never complained about it too much," Jellish said. "I went there each day and I made battle plans each night. They're not your enemy, but you better have a plan or sixth graders will take you down."

Last night?s celebration had added significance because it was the first time the State School Superintendent was there. Tony Evers gave last night?s keynote address after spending the day with students in the Pittsville School District.

"I get around the state often. We're blessed in central Wisconsin to have this kind excellence in teaching and this kind of support for excellence," he said. "Frankly, I don't see events like this (elsewhere."

Among the 18 educators honored as teachers of distinction last night were Cindy Wirkuty of Greenwood and Marty Yohn from Granton.
