GPS TRACKING SYSTEM GOES DOWN
Thursday, October 7th, 2010 -- 11:33 AM
The state's GPS monitoring system for tracking offenders in the community is back up and running, after an apparent massive failure on Tuesday. Officials with the state Department of Corrections say the GPS system that tracks about 300 offenders in Wisconsin was temporarily down on Tuesday, following a multi-state database failure. The DOC says its monitoring center noticed the problem and reported it to the private firm that maintains the system right away. Under an emergency response plan, DOC and local law enforcement began locating and detaining GPS-tracked offenders in secure facilities. Although the system was down, officials say the movements of offenders were still being recorded and were available for review once it went back on-line. Normal operations resumed on Tuesday night. As of yet, DOC says it does not appear any offenders violated restrictions on their movement while real-time tracking was down.Feel free to contact us with questions and/or comments.
