DIVERSITY DAYS HELD AT THE HIGHGROUND

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 -- 12:56 PM

Over 100 area students learned about different cultures at The Highground Tuesday.

It?s called Diversity Days.

128 students from Granton, Neillsville and Abbotsford visited several stations, each manned by a person or group explaining their culture.

David Radtke of the Wausau area is a member of a group that shares a Pomeranian-German heritage.

"We're setting up a display to show the people where our German ancestors came from," Radtke said.

Radtke gives examples of both the High German and Low German languages as the different groups come by.

Most students have never even heard of Pomerania, which is a region of northern Germany and Poland, along the Baltic Sea, he adds.

Kids also got a sampling of some good old-fashioned Slovenian culture. Bill Snedic of Willard says it's important to keep traditions alive.

"We are trying to inform the younger generation about cultures and heritage. If we don't, this is going to be forgotten, like so many other things," Snedic said.

The Slovenian club based in Willard meets four times per year and has a big summer picnic.
