PRIMARY ELECTION COMING SOON
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 -- 2:53 PM
The Fall Primary Election is just one week away, and we want to make sure everyone?s vote is counted. The voting procedure for primary elections is different than general elections; you can?t vote for candidates in more than one party.
This year, the top statewide race is the Republican primary for Governor. Locally, we have three Republican candidates and two Democrats seeking their party?s nomination for Clark County Sheriff.
County Clerk Christina Jensen says you can?t vote in the Republican Gubernatorial election AND the Democratic Sheriff?s primary, or vice versa.
"You cannot. If you cross over parties... the votes on your ballot will not count," she says.
A number of Clark County municipalities have purchased their own precinct counters in time for Tuesday?s election. Voters in those municipalities will use optically scanned ballots. The counting machines will alert the voter if they've improperly crossed over.
"When the voter puts their ballot in, it will give them the message that they have over-voted," she says. "At that time they can have their ballot returned. They can return the ballot to their poll worker and get a second ballot to vote on."
Other municipalities will actually be counting ballots by hand this year.
Jensen expects voter turnout locally to be right around the 28% predicted statewide. This is the first election in many years that county will not be using a central counter machine. Jensen says she expects to be done tabulating the votes a little bit earlier than in recent elections. She hopes to have results between 11 p.m. and midnight next Tuesday.
