AREA SCHOOLS RECOGNIZED

A number of area schools are staring the year by receiving honors for their success in educating students from low-income families.The Department of Public Instruction announced 154 Wisconsin Schools of Recognition this morning.
The schools have high poverty rates, but show above average student achievement in tests.
Locally, Abbotsford, Alma Center, Colby, Granton, Greenwood, Loyal, Owen-Withee and Thorp received the distinction.
The schools will receive a plaque at an October 18 awards ceremony at the State Capitol and $2,000.
