One of the county?s largest employers is building a new facility that will lead to up to 20 new jobs.Grassland Dairy in Greenwood recently broke ground on the new building that will process a milk byproduct called permeate.
"We've got so much of it, we need to add this facility," explains Grassland Vice President Trevor Wuethrich. "Permeate is a byproduct of milk. Milk contains fat, protein, permeate, lactose (is the) same thing."
Permeate is used as a sugar substitute?mainly in the Asian market. While it can be marketed domestically, they?re hoping to make some inroads overseas.
"We hired a young man in our industrial export division who's specifically focused on moving dairy products out of the U.S. for us," he says. "Obviously, if we want to grow some sales, we're going to do that in areas other than the U.S."
The new facility will be built by local contractors. It should be up and running sometime next summer or fall and could lead to 15 to 20 new jobs.
