2010 ONE OF THE WETTEST ON RECORD
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 -- 11:39 AM
The summer of 2010 is winding down, and it will be remembered as a hot and wet one.The National Weather Service in La Crosse has been keeping data since 1873. With a week left in the meteorological summer, which ends when September begins, 2010 is already the 5th wettest summer on record.
19.79 inches of rain have been measured from June 1st to August 22, making it the wettest summer on record through that date. This is 8.60 inches above the normal of 11.19 inches.
"This summer will definitely be remembered as a wetter summer," states Dan Baumgardt with the NWS.
The wettest summer on record was in 2007 when 20.32 inches fell. Measurable rainfall has fallen 38 out of 82 days. Normally during an entire summer, measurable rain falls on 31 days.
There doesn?t seem to be a larger story here.
"It was just a pattern of having many storms move right through our area. The jet stream was very active through our area," he says.
And, with a week to go, we?ve entered into a cooler, drier air mass. It doesn't look like we?ll get any more measurable rainfall this month.
