State Agency Deems Neillsville's Merchant Hotel Unfit for Occupancy
Wednesday, January 13th, 2021 -- 2:00 PM
The Merchant Hotel building in Neillsville has been deemed unfit for occupancy by the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Protective Services.
According to the Wisconsin DSPS, the state agency conducted an inspection of the Merchant Hotel after receiving complaints about the condition of the building.
Although the building isn’t considered condemned, the state did a walkthrough and series of inspections with local agencies and determined the building cannot be occupied.
There were many things that contributed to this decision including the living conditions of apartments, asbestos in the building, fire hazards, and even the discovery of the structural integrity of the building being compromised.
The residents in the building were told they could no longer live there. City agencies were able to provide assistance. All the residents that were living in the building were able to make arrangements to find new places to stay.
