MEIER GETS ATTORNEY, BUT WILL HAVE TO PAY

Monday, August 2nd, 2010 -- 1:52 PM

A judge has appointed a lawyer to represent a man convicted of felony-murder, but he?ll have to pay for the service.

Wood County Judge James Mason appointed Wisconsin Rapids attorney Michael Lauterbach to represent Tyler Meier as he navigates the appeals process.

Meier was sentenced to five years in prison for punching a man at the Brickyard Bar and Restaurant last year. The man hit his head on the floor and died as a result of his injuries.

Meier claims he doesn?t have enough money to pay for an attorney, but Mason notes the state's Public Defender?s Office denied his indigency claim. He orders Meier to pay Clark County $50 a month to cover the cost of counsel.

No future court dates have been set.
