PROPERTY TAXES NEAR CRITICAL MASS
Thursday, July 29th, 2010 -- 12:15 PM
From WRN:Property taxes are approaching a critical level in our state.
We're now paying 4.5% percent of our personal income in Wisconsin on property taxes, according to Todd Berry of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance. He says it's been climbing steadily.
"When this percentage gets high enough, it seems like it's a political blood-pressure barometer," Berry explains, "either the legislature does something dramatic, or the public reacts in a fairly dramatic way."
Berry says as the percentage approaches 5%, taxpayers get upset and politicians get nervous. He says that can lead to efforts to reduce the tax bite for homeowners, or result in a lot of legislators being kicked out of office.
