CITY COUNCIL RECAP
Wednesday, July 14th, 2010 -- 12:38 PM
The Neillsville City Council took action last night that should lead to expanded taxi service throughout Clark County. The City Council unanimously approved a motion to expand their shared-ride taxi program to include a deviated fixed-route system that will cover the rest of the Clark County.
While the city took action on the matter last night, the county will run the expanded program as a separate entity from the city?s taxi service.
It?s a bit complicated, but Mark Jones of Abby Vans said the state doesn?t allow ?overlapping? coverage areas for these programs; therefore the city and county have to formally coordinate their efforts. The city?s only role will be to hold the contract and funnel the county?s share of the state and federal aid to them.
"If you raise your fares, that won't affect their fares, and visa versa," Jones explained. "It's almost two separate systems that are working together."
The Council also unanimously rescinded the city?s policy requiring firefighters to live and work in the city and approved a new requirement that they live within the fire district area. Fire Chief Matt Meyer explained he?s had trouble recruiting firefighters in the city, and he?s hoping the expanded area will help.
