DPT TARGETS O-F LOGO
Monday, June 21st, 2010 -- 11:49 AM
The state DPI says the Osseo-Fairchild?s Chieftans logo is race-based and a hearing has been scheduled for both sides to debate its merits. The logo depicts a Ho-Chunk Native American Chief. Following a procedure laid out by a new piece of legislation, a local couple filed a complaint with the state.
So far, the DPI has ruled the district failed to provide evidence that a Native American tribe had approved the chieftains' name and logo to be used. A hearing has now been set for June 28th in Madison. The district will have the opportunity to defend the logo and mascot at that time. The state will give a final decision within 45 days of that hearing.
