COURT PAVES WAY FOR MEIER APPEAL
Wednesday, June 16th, 2010 -- 2:09 PM
An appellate court decision has opened the door to an appeal in a Neillsville bar room death case.Last week, the 4th District Court of Appeals in Madison extended the deadline for Tyler Meier to appeal his conviction on Felony-Murder in the death of 43-year-old Keith Young. Meier pleaded no contest to the charge and was sentenced to five years in prison. During the sentencing, Meier expressed remorse and noted pleading no contest was the right thing to do.
But Meier?s tone changed after receiving the prison sentence, and court documents indicate he now doesn?t feel he was given good counsel by attorney Harry Hertel.
Now the ball is back into Meier?s court; he could move to withdraw his plea on the basis of ineffective counsel, or he could directly appeal the conviction to the 4th District Court of Appeals.
In other news from the case, the state Public Defender?s Office has determined Meier doesn?t qualify for their services.
