Wisconsin Governor Activates National Guard Troops to Support Capitol Police
Tuesday, January 12th, 2021 -- 7:00 PM
(WISN) Gov. Tony Evers has activated the Wisconsin National Guard to support Capitol police ahead of any unrest at the Statehouse in Madison.
The announcement was made Monday afternoon. Members of the Wisconsin National Guard will mobilize to active duty to support safety and security efforts Evers said.
The troops are part of the Wisconsin National Guard Reaction Force, which consists of troops trained to respond to requests for assistance on short notice. The Wisconsin National Guard will serve in a support role to Madison authorities and conduct a site security mission.
The Wisconsin National Guard did not discuss troop numbers, movements, timelines, equipment, tactics, or procedures. Workers boarded up windows at the state Capitol earlier Monday amid threats that right-wing groups may try to incite violence at statehouses across the country this weekend.
