Monday, May 17th, 2010 -- 11:19 AM
The Neillsville City Council took the first step toward raising utility rates this week.Council members authorized a study of possible rate increases. It will be conducted in late summer, and the rate increases could go into effect for the 4th quarter of this year.
City Clerk/Treasurer Rex Roehl says the utilities are supposed to be self-funded, but ran over $324,000 in the red last year.
Sewer rates were last increased in 2007; water rates were last increased in 2005.
Roehl says city residents and businesses have cut back on water usage, causing the deficit.
