A convicted murdered and sex offender will move out of the Clark County Jail and into a Town of York residence next week. The news came as a big surprise to his soon-to-be neighbors, who say they haven?t been notified. The news media received a notification Thursday morning from the Clark County Sheriff?s Department that 40-year-old Gary Thiede will be released from jail on Monday, May 17th. He?ll reside at a rental home located at W4028 CTH C, in the Town of York. That residence has a Neillsville address, but is actually located between Neillsville, Granton and Loyal, near the intersection with CTH K.
Thiede has served a prison sentence for 2nd degree murder, 3rd degree sexual assault and attempted child enticement. He was convicted of the 1988 stabbing death of a 16-year-old boy from Hatfield. He is a level 3 sex offender, who officials say has the potential to re-offend.
He was released from prison in December, but has been residing in the jail pending his ability to locate a suitable residence.
Thiede will remain under the supervision of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections until September of 2016.
Property owner, Robert Poeschel says he believes in giving people second chances. He lives about 100-feet from the rental house.
"Everyone deserves a chance. This is something that happened years ago," Poeschel said Thursday morning. "I think he learned. Hopefully, he learned from his mistake."
Before agreeing to rent to Thiede, Poeschel sat down with him and Probation and Parole officers. He came away "very impressed" and convinced that he had turned a corner and would be well monitored.
But Poeschel?s neighbors were shocked by the news.
"I'm very surprised. Very shocked," one area resident told us. "It's nerve-racking."
