DOYLE SIGNS BILLS AT EDGAR FARM

Thursday, May 13th, 2010 -- 2:09 PM

Governor Doyle stopped at the Peter and Susie Arnold farm in rural Edgar Wednesday. He signed several bills, including a measure that will extend the dairy and livestock investment tax credits through 2012.

"These tax credits have allowed producers to be more modern and more efficient," Doyle said. "The state of Wisconsin is saying, 'we'll step up and help you up to $75,000 under this new legislation'."

Doyle says dairy farming has suffered in recent years. "It's been a tough time. They're now beginning to turn around and come out of it," he notes.

The governor also said he's sent a letter to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack
requesting that Marathon County be declared a federal disaster area, because
of the frost damage done to the ginseng crop.

"Our state Department of Agriculture has been monitoring it very closely. It's pretty clear there's real significant loss. Certainly enough to qualify for Federal Disaster Aid," Doyle explained.

If the designation is attained, ginseng farmers could qualify for low-interest loans and insurance payments.

The governor also signed the Farm to School bill, which will help Wisconsin
schools have easier access to locally grown produce.
