LASSA IN, DECKER OUT IN RACE FOR OBEY'S SEAT

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 -- 11:40 AM

State senator Julie Lassa (D-Stevens Point) will run as a Democrat for Rep. Dave Obey's 7th District seat in the U.S. House. Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker will not run.

Decker spokeswoman Carrie Lynch said Decker will focus on getting reelected to the Senate and making sure Democrats keep control of the chamber in this fall's elections.

That announcement came after Sen. Lassa announced she would enter the race to replace Obey, who is retiring after 41 years in Congress.

Decker (D-Wausau) was considered a top contender to be Obey's successor.

Sen. Pat Kreitlow (D-Chippewa Falls) was also rumored to be mulling a run, but he issued a statement Monday endorsing Lassa's campaign.
