HELP FOR THE HUNGRY IS IN THE MAIL

Thursday, May 6th, 2010 -- 9:43 AM

Helping feed those in need will be as simple as walking to your mailbox on Saturday.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is coming up Saturday, May 8th. The 18th annual event has become the largest one-day food drive in the country.

Area residents should have received some bags in the mail that can be used to donate food.

?The best thing to do is place the donations in the plastic bags. You can put those bags right by your mailbox. If you don?t have a bag, you can just put those donations right in a box, and leave that by the mailbox, as well,? says Neillsville Postmaster Lisa Schilling.

There are also several alternate drop-off sites, including the Post Office, Pamida, IGA and Memorial Medical Center.

The Neillsville area has always been extremely generous with their donations, which are divided between two are food banks.

?We?ve done excellent, actually,? Schilling notes. ?Last year, we collected just over 5,400 pounds. Our goal is to always beat the previous year.?

Schilling gives area letter carriers praise for their hard work on the drive every year, and notes a number of area businesses help, as do about 20 volunteers.
