MEMORIAL MED TO OFFER SLEEP LAB SERVICES

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 -- 11:43 AM

Memorial Medical Center is teaming up with a Minnesota-based provider to offer sleep lab services at their Neillsville location.

Dr. Courtney Whitney of Whitney Sleep Center will be on hand Wednesday for a Sleep Lab Open House at Memorial Med. It will run from 2:30 to 7:30 with a seminar from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Of course, one of the most common sleep disorders is sleep apnea.

"What happens is, when you sleep, your airway does not allow you to breathe normally," Whitney explains. "You have to arouse from sleep in order to open up your throat."

Most sufferers have no idea they're afflicted.

Symptoms can include frequent trips to the bathroom at night, fatigue, depression, high blood pressure and headaches upon waking. The outcomes can be serious, including stroke, heart failure and even death.

To check for apnea and other sleep disorders, patients undergo a sleep study.

"We have to monitor quite a few parameters," Whitney explains of the overnight test. "We monitor brainwave frequencies, we monitor eye movements, which allow us to identify REM sleep, we monitor leg movements, your heart and oxygen levels."
