PUPPY MILL PANEL MEETS

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 -- 8:29 AM

A 12-member panel tasked with working out the details of the puppy mill ban met for the first time Wednesday.

"It's just a matter of overseeing them, as well as shelters, breeders and dog shelters to make sure they're all on the same page and all follow the same guidelines," explains Committee member Kim Waugus of Beaver Dam.

There are plenty of questions that will need to be answered.

"Some rescues don't have a facility, so there is no facility to inspect," Waugus notes. "What are we going to be looking for those rescues that do have facilities? What will be looking at and how will they be monitored?"

The panel is meeting monthly and will complete their work by the end of this year. Public hearings will take place in spring of 2011 with the new taking effect the following June.

Neillsville is well-represented on the panel. Mike Marsch of Neillsville will represent dog breeders selling 50 or more large dogs a year. Chuck Wegner of Neillsville will represent humane societies sheltering fewer than 500 dogs a year.
