CLARK CO. COMMITTEE SAYS 'NO' TO UTV'S

Thursday, April 15th, 2010 -- 12:18 PM

Clark County ATV trails will not be open to so-called UTVs when they open May 1st.

The Forestry and Parks Committee discussed the issue at a meeting Thursday morning.

The state recently approved a measure allowing Utility Terrain Vehicles, also known as Light-weight Utility Vehicles or side-by-sides, on ATV trails. To participate in the pilot program, counties must opt in. Once a county opts in, individual townships can opt in or out.

Forestry and Parks Director Mark Heil recommended against participating at this time. He said the state was starting a registration system for UTVs, but was not offering any funding to counties for extra trail maintenance.

Brian Duell, the trails coordinator, said he?s been fielding a lot of calls from people wondering if Clark County was going to participate.

While the trails are wide enough to accommodate the larger, slower machines, there would need to be some changes to the system.

A motion to open Clark County trails to UTVs did not receive a second. The committee passed a motion to table the issue until August.
