MURPHY BIDS FAREWELL
Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 -- 11:36 AM
It was the end of an era Tuesday night at Neillsville?s City Hall as one of the longest serving Mayors in city history presided over her last meeting.Diane Murphy was first elected to the post in 1994. She had a two-year hiatus between 2000 and 2002, but otherwise has been in the office ever since.
Murphy lost a close election last Tuesday to Dewey Poeschel.
In bidding farewell to the City Council, Murphy thanked them for their cooperation, and noted there have been many improvements to the city during the past decade-and-a-half, including several new businesses in the Industrial Park, the development of the Boon Commercial Park and residential subdivision, the construction of a new hotel and dental clinic, just to name a few.
According to City Clerk Rex Roehl, Murphy will join Bob Lulloff as the longest serving mayors in Neillsville?s history. Lulloff served 14 years from 1980 to 1994.
Poeschel will be officially sworn in on April 20th.
COUNCIL CONSIDERS LIQUOR SALES REQUEST
Also at the meeting, the Council heard from Greg Hansen of Hansen IGA. That group is purchasing Bob and Caryl?s IGA, and will take over early next month.
They would like to move the liquor store into the grocery store for what they described as ?cost and convenience? reasons.
The city ordinance doesn?t allow liquor sales within 300 feet of a church, and there is a church around 200 feet from the store. But, since the city passed their ordinance, state statute has eased on the issue, allowing municipalities to grant exemptions.
The Council directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance change that would allow them to sell alcohol in the store.
