SNOWLESS MARCH!
Friday, April 2nd, 2010 -- 1:32 PM
We're a few days into April already, and it turns out March 2010 was remarkable for a number of reasons. The National Weather Service in La Crosse says March will go down in the record books as the first snowless March. The previous record for the least amount of snow in a March is a trace, occurring in four Marches (1919, 1973, 1986, and 1990). During a typical March, La Crosse receives 7.2 inches of snow.
Unless we get some snow moving forward, this winter will also be the earliest last measurable snow of a snow season. The last measurable snow in La Crosse was February 20th; the previous record was February 24th, set in the 1989-90 snow season. Normally, the last measurable snow of a snow season occurs on April 4th.
Since the area has had snow as late as May 28th (during the 1946-47 snow season), we will have to wait quite awhile before we know whether these will stand as new records.
