CLARK CO. LOOKING INTO UTILITY VEHICLES, TRAILS

Friday, April 2nd, 2010 -- 1:31 PM

Clark County ATV trails will not be open to so-called UTVs when they open on May 1st.

Trails coordinator Brian Duell says the trails are closed right now for the ?spring break-up?.

He?s been fielding a lot of calls wondering if Clark County is participating in a statewide pilot program allowing Utility Terrain Vehicles, also known as Light-weight Utility Vehicles, on ATV trails.

"When someone's talking about an LUV, side-by-side, UTV, they're referencing things like the Yamaha Rhino, Polaris Ranger, Kawasaki Mule, and things in that range," Duell explains.

Basically, it?s an ATV with rollover protection, a steering wheel and cargo space.

Under a revised state pilot program, these vehicles may be allowed on certain county ATV trails and routes around the state, but, the county must first approve a resolution to that affect.

"We haven't gotten all the details on how the registration system is going to work, or how the maintenance money is going to follow through." Duell notes. "And we haven't totally evaluated our trail system to make sure our bridges are wide enough and our gates are wide enough."

Clark County isn?t going to be ready to allow UTVs by May 1st. Individual towns that have routes will also have to opt in or out of the pilot program.
