LEGISLATORS TEAM UP TO CALL FOR DNR OVERSIGHT

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 -- 12:24 PM

An area Democrat and a Republican are calling for more DNR accountability before they spend $2-million on a new deer-herd management study.

Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) and Sen. Pat Kreitlow (D-Chippewa Falls) have introduced a bill that would require the DNR to get legislative approval before spending the federal money on the study. The legislation is in response to concerns raised by sportsmen throughout Wisconsin about the department?s deer herd management policies.

If approved, the bill would prohibit DNR spending of the Pittman-Robertson funds without first notifying the Joint Committee on Finance for approval.

Both legislators note the DNR?s counting methods have been questioned after resulting in lower than expected deer harvests in recent years.
