Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010 -- 12:22 PM
A couple of area counties will be getting government help to combat obesity.Governor Jim Doyle announced Monday that Wisconsin has been awarded nearly $6 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to support public health efforts to reduce obesity, promote healthy eating habits, and increase physical activity among children and adults in La Crosse and Wood Counties.
The goal of this new wellness initiative is to promote healthy living in communities by implementing multiple strategies that support healthy eating, being physically active at all ages, and maintaining a healthy weight.
Some of the initiatives Wood County will focus on include: increasing daily physical activity programming and policies in after-school and childcare settings; building social networks and community-wide challenges for physical activity; implementing a Farm-to-School program in three school districts; and implementing nutrition labeling initiatives in schools and restaurants.
