NEILLSVILLE MAN GETS 10 YEARS IN BURGLARY SPREE

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010 -- 8:18 AM

Mark Hiserman of Neillsville was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a string of burglaries around Clark County.

Originally facing 33 charges, Hiserman pleaded to four.

During his sentencing Monday, Hiserman said he had changed his life. He is now working with mental health professionals, after realizing, in his words, ?I?m getting too old for this.?

District attorney Darwin Zwieg described Hiserman?s criminal record as, perhaps, the lengthiest he?s ever seen. A presentence investigator determined he was likely a sociopath.

Judge James Mason also heard from a relative of one of the victims, who urged a stiff sentence. He said among the items taken from his daughter was a digital camera with a 5-generation family photo.

The total restitution bill is nearly $25,000.

In handing down the 10-year sentence, Judge Mason said Hiserman had conducted "a mass burglary on Clark County," which not only took away residents' property, but also their sense of security.

"Wow! that's a huge prior record," Judge Mason exclaimed while looking over the three pages of prior convictions.

While he noted Hiserman?s demeanor had changed for the better from previous court appearances, Mason said he felt he would have a nearly "100% probability" of re-offending.

"You don't give me much to work on," Mason told Hiserman, explaining character was among the criteria considered during sentencing. "(But) there is some remorse there."
