MORE EVIDENCE COUGARS ROAM THE REGION

Monday, March 8th, 2010 -- 3:09 PM

There was a time not too long ago when wildlife experts would laugh off cougar sightings in the area as just the result of active imaginations.

No more.

The presence of cougars in Wisconsin has been confirmed in recent years. While tracks and physical evidence have confirmed the giant cat is here, motion-activated trail cameras have snapped some impressive shots of the animals, including here in Clark County.

The DNR?s website features a page devoted to cougar sightings.

The most recent entry features a picture taken by a trail camera on private land in Clark County on January 18th. Another camera captured what?s believed to the same animal a couple days later, about 12-miles away. The sightings were in the towns of Hewett and Hendren.

These are impressive cats, they are good climbers and can leap more than 20 feet up into a tree from a standstill. They can jump to the ground from as high as 60 feet up a tree. A single male lion may travel 25 miles a night when hunting. There primary diet is deer and they are most active at dawn and dusk, the times when deer are out feeding.
