READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 -- 11:30 AM

Granton Elementary Students are celebrating Read Across America Week.

Legendary children?s author Dr. Suess was born on this date in 1904. The National Education Association started Read Across America Week in 1997.

"Reading is essential in everyday life. It is the underpinning of education," says Heidi Much, the Middle School Reading and Elementary Title I Math instructor at Granton. "Early reading often determines success in language and math areas in the future."

Granton has several fun events planned for the week. Kids will make pledges to read, there will be themes everyday ? today, kids will get to eat Green Eggs and ham for lunch.

"Friday, we'll have a school-wide assembly where students will receive their awards if they meet their goals this week," she says.

While schools obviously help, Much says parents need to encourage reading at home.

"Make time and remind them that they need to do it. Sit down and read yourself...so kids realize reading isn't a punishment, or something you have to do, but it's something you get to do."
