SUDER OPPOSES EARLY RELEASE IDEA
Thursday, February 25th, 2010 -- 9:37 AM
The state is faced with a huge budget deficit, but an area state lawmaker isn't keen on one of the ideas to fix it.Rep. Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) says he'll introduce a bill to end the practice of releasing well behaved prisoners early.
The early release program allows inmates to subtract time from their prison terms for good behavior. Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle included the program in the 2009-2011 budget to help close a $6.6 billion shortfall and free up space in the state's burgeoning prison system.
Seeing Democrats control both houses of state government, and the Governor's Office, it's unlikely Suder's proposal will go anywhere.
