Members of the Neillsville and Granton FFA chapters are among the hundreds of thousands in the country celebrating National FFA Week. The organization began in 1928 as the Future Farmers of America.
The list of former members that have gone on to notoriety in business, politics and entertainment is a long one. It includes actor Matthew Fox, who stars on ABC?s Lost, Singer Willie Nelson, and Green Bay Packer Mark Tauscher.
Who knows, maybe an FFAer from the local area will ?make it big?.
"It's a really great honor," Jake Mitte says of being the President of the Neillsville FFA. "Kids look up to you and you get to teach them a lot of things."
Jake?s been a member since junior high. He joined because he wanted to go to a rodeo, but ?stuck with it? and has learned a lot.
"I met a lot of nice people. (I've learned) the qualities of leadership and responsibility," Mitte explains.
Kevin Eibergen is the President of the Granton FFA. His whole family was involved in the organization, so it was a foregone conclusion that he?d join. The FFA has taken him to a lot of interesting places.
"I've been out west. This summer we're going to 6 Flags in Illinois, I've been to Washington DC, Indianapolis. The FFA has taken me a lot of different places," he says.
The Granton FFA has been recognized for their great Food For America program.
"This last year, we were first in the state for our Food for America program. We took our elementary kids out to the farm to teach them where their food comes from," Eibergen explains.
