After 10 years on the job, Clark County?s Coroner continues to learn about his trade.Richard Schleifer of Neillsville was recently certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI). He?s one of only around 1,400 diplomats in the U.S. and Canada?
"It's a course put on by the St. Louis Medical College. It's an eight-part test," he explains. "Being a member of the (state) Association, we're trying to strive for better education of coroners, because their job does become more critical all the time."
Schleifer and his three deputies are involved in between 300 and 400 death investigations every year.
"We mostly investigate deaths that are unexplained or unusual. Death following accidents, (for example)," Schleifer notes.
Schleifer is on the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Coroners/Medial Association. He hopes more coroners take the course. He says he learned a lot.
