Monday, February 15th, 2010 -- 11:41 AM
The new head of the Wisconsin FFA Alumni Association is a familiar face.Former Neillsville FFA Adviser Herman Seebandt was elected President of the Association at the group?s annual convention this past weekend in Manitowoc.
Seebandt was an ag instructor in Neillsville for 33 years, from 1971 to 2004. He initially didn?t even want to start an alumni program in Neillsville, but quickly changed his tune.
"A lot of the kids wanted to start an alumni, at first I was resistant, being a new teacher and being quite busy," he remembers. "Eventually, we started it. We had a core group of past officers and presidents. We've been going strong ever since."
The Neillsville FFA Alumni chapter has around 57 members.
"We totally support the local chapter for scholarships. When they go to the National Convention, we supply them money for that. We pay for half their jackets," Seebandt says. "There's a lot of little things that come into play that the Alumni supports them with."
This will be a busy year for Seebandt, but he?s looking forward to it.
"A lot traveling, a lot of visiting each of the schools. We visit each of the sections if we can."
Also at the convention this weekend, Rex Roehl of Neillsville was awarded a silver certificate for the State FFA Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award. Roehl is a member of the Neillsville FFA Alumni and has served as its treasurer since 1982.
The Wisconsin FFA Alumni is the nation's largest state affiliate, with over 8,000 members listed on the group's charter.
