A local District Attorney is worried about possible layoffs as the state tries to fix its budget hole.Jackson County DA Gerald Fox says he may be forced to charge only serious offenses if the state goes forward with hour reductions or even layoffs of assistant district attorneys.
According to the Jackson Co. Chronicle, Fox plans to focus on felonies, assaultive misdemeanors and serious traffic cases if a plan to lay off assistant prosecutors moves forward.
Some surmise smaller offices like Jackson and Clark County, that only have two prosecutors, could be hit the hardest.
As part of his budget-fix, Governor Jim Doyle has proposed cutting the two-year budget for district attorneys? offices by 8.1 percent.
