Governor Evers Prepares Wisconsin National Guard Ahead of Kenosha Shooting Charging Decision

(WMTV) Gov. Tony Evers has authorized the Wisconsin National Guard to assist authorities in Kenosha Monday ahead of the charging decision in the officer-involved shooting case of Jacob Blake.

Gov. Evers said officials in Kenosha had requested the National Guard’s assistance in order to ensure public safety, according to a news release.  “Our members of the National Guard will be on hand to support local first responders, ensure Kenoshans are able to assemble safely, and to protect critical infrastructure as necessary,” the governor said.

A decision on the case is expected within the next two weeks.  About 500 troops will head to Kenosha, Gov. Evers noted.  The National Guard can not violate the ability of people to peacefully protest or interfere with the ability of journalists to report on this case.

Mayor John Antaramian and Police Chief Daniel Miskinis said Sunday that they will designate a demonstration space in the Wisconsin city, limit bus routes, close roads and impose curfews, among other measures.

Officers Ryan Sheskey, Brittany Meronek and Vincent Arenas responded to a domestic disturbance on Aug. 23. Sheskey, who is white, ended up shooting Blake, who is Black, seven times in the back, leaving him paralyzed.
