MAN CONVICTED IN PREMISE ID CASE

Monday, October 26th, 2009 -- 11:34 AM

While a similar case in Clark County has received more headlines, there are reports that a western Wisconsin farmer was convicted of violating a law requiring livestock owners to register their properties.

Patrick Monchilovich of Cumberland was ordered to pay nearly $400 in fines and costs.

It?s believed to be the first such conviction in the state.

The law requires livestock owners to register property, including what species are on the premises.

State officials say the information will help them handle disease outbreaks.

Here in Clark County, dozens of farmers, many members of the Old Order Amish community, are fighting the rule on religious grounds. The case is still pending.
