BEER TAX INCREASE GETS A HEARING
Monday, October 12th, 2009 -- 11:48 AM
A state legislative committee will hold a public hearing Tuesday on a proposal to increase Wisconsin's beer tax for the first time since 1969.The bill's sponsor Rep. Terese Berceau, a Democrat from Madison, says this is the first time the proposal has had a hearing in 30 years. Wisconsin has the 3rd lowest beer tax in the country.
But, don't expect it to go up anytime soon. Gov. Jim Doyle and the Tavern League of Wisconsin oppose the measure. It would raise the tax 2.4-cents per bottle of beer. The projected $58-million raised would be directed to help pay for all the costs associated with alcohol abuse.
