EXTENDED HUNTING SEASON GETS HEARINGS

Monday, October 12th, 2009 -- 11:43 AM

The first of 11 public hearings on a proposal to extend hunting season will be held Wednesday night in Crivitz.

The Natural Resources Board wants to know how the public feels about a plan to add seven days to the traditional 9-day hunt, starting in fall 2010.

If approved, the hunt would start two Saturdays before Thanksgiving.

It's a potential replacement to the Earn-A-Buck program, which was cut this spring. That regulation required hunters to kill an antlerless deer before they could shoot a buck.

After Crivitiz, other hearings are planned in Onalaska, Madison, Rhinelander, Ashland, Appleton, Eau Claire, Sturtevant, Pewaukee, Spooner and Stevens Point.
