NATIONAL 4-H WEEK!

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 -- 9:04 AM

Hundreds of Clark County youth are celebrating National 4-H Week.

4-H is focused on the personal growth of its nearly 6-million youth members. The organization has been around for over 100 years. Clark County?s 4-H is especially active.

Kathy Welsh is the President of the Clark County 4-H Leaders Federation. She has five children in the Corner Clovers 4-H club?

"4-H is an opportunity for kids Kindergarten through 12th grade to belong to a club and experience projects, leadership opportunities, the Clark County Fair, camps," Welsh says, "There's a wide range of opportunities for these children to gather life experiences that will help them as they mature and become adults."

Welsh remembers her childhood being enhanced by her participation in the organization.

"It was a very positive experience," she rememers, "there were a lot of things I had to work very hard for. It's helped me become a better person."

2009 was a big year for the Clark County 4-H. Kathy says the highlight was the construction of a brand new 4-H foodstand on the Clark County Fairgrounds.

"It was just a phenomenal fete to do that within a year. To raise the money we did, and have that up and running for the Clark County fair. It's just an outstanding building," Welsh says.

Clark County has 24 clubs, consisting of 480 families and nearly 800 youth. If you?d like more information, you can contact the Clark County UW-Extension office at 743-5121.
