24 ATV CRASHES IN CLARK CO. THIS YEAR

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 -- 1:56 PM

A Granton man died this week of injuries sustained in an ATV crash earlier this month.

It is the 2nd ATV fatality in Clark County this year.

Chief Deputy Jim Backus of the Clark County Sheriff?s Department says there have been 24 crashes in the county this year. That in-line with previous years, but there are still a few months of riding left.

Backus says there are some common denominators to the accidents.

"The main factor in all of them is speed," he explains, "and with that, inexperience. You know, coming around the corner to fast, hitting gravel."

Backus notes most of the crashes involve operators from out of the area.

ATV accidents present some unique difficulties for law enforcement and rescue personnel.

"There's specialized equipment that needs to respond and get (the victim) out to the ambulance or air medical response. It does slow down the response to get the injured party to the hospital," Backus says.

Area trails are patrolled by a county recreation deputy, reserve officers and the DNR.
