WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 -- 10:14 AM

You can't blame pork producers for cringing every time they hear the term 'Swine Flu'. Now, a Wisconsin state representative has sponsored a nonbinding resolution asking state agencies and the media to call the virus "2009 H1N1 Influenza."

It will be on the floor of the Assembly Thursday.

Rep. Phil Garthwaite (D-Dickeyville) notes numerous government agencies, along with the pork industry, believe the name doesn't fit.

Some citizens may be scared of eating pork products, even though there is no risk.

How did the name come about, anyway?

The Associated Press says the bug began in pigs and most of its genetic makeup is from pig viruses.
