FALL FEST BRINGS GRANTON TOGETHER
Monday, September 14th, 2009 -- 1:41 PM
The 59th Annual Granton Fall Fest wrapped up yesterday with beautiful weather and a huge parade. The Festival had a bunch of new elements this year, including the first-ever medallion hunt and tractor pull.
"It was huge," said FFA advisor Cheryl Steinbach, "It has been a beautiful weekend. We have all kinds of new things, the traditional things. Beautiful days, beautiful weather. It was perfect."
During the parade, Steinbach made a special point to recognize Francis Steiner, Granton's longtime FFA advisor who helped start the Fall Fest nearly 60 years ago.
"It was kind of a brainstorm he had. He said we should do something to promote our town. They had a vegetable show and a little parade, and it's just accumulated since then," she recalls.
The Fall Fest is fun, but it's also a great opportunity to teach students about the importance of community.
"It's a great opportunity for them to understand the value of community, getting together and serving," she says, "Our FFA members go ahead and plan all the kids' activities. They take the leadership role."
"Even after the parade today at around 4 p.m., they're going to clean up the streets here."
Keith and Mary Bass were the honored Granton citizens this year. The theme was ?Celebrating our German Heritage.?
