BUSES ON THE ROAD SOON

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 -- 10:25 AM

Hard to believe, but school starts next week.

Neillsville?s first day will be Tuesday, and that means school buses will make their return to area roads.

Dale Erickson is the transportation director for the district. He says the drivers will be going over their route sheets this week; some may elect to do a dry run of their route.

Neillsville runs 10 country buses, with one special needs route.

Typically, drivers leave their homes at around 6:30 a.m. Erickson says motorists should plan for the buses to be out and about next week.

"Usually, the buses are within one or two minutes of a given time every school day," he says. "We always want to remind motorists that the law requires you to stop for a school bus with lights flashing and stop-arm extended."

You should also be aware children in town will be walking to bus stops, Erickson says.

Erickson says the school bus is a very safe means of transportation, but inconsiderate drivers can make a bus driver?s life more difficult.

"The scariest thing as a bus driver is, when you put your red lights on, motorists think, 'I have to get passed that bus.' That's the worst thing you can do," he says.
