SAVED BY THE HELMET

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 -- 12:49 PM

A Marshfield man has received the ?Saved by the Helmet Award? at the Governor?s Conference on Highway Safety in Appleton.

James Kramer was nominated by the Clark County Sheriff?s Department after a September 4, 2008, motorcycle crash. Kramer was driving his motorcycle eastbound on CTH H at the intersection of CTH Y when a vehicle turned directly in front of him, causing him to strike the right rear corner of the automobile. Kramer ended up in a ditch, 142 feet from the point of impact.

He sustained broken bones in his right foot and required stitches to his right knee. He also suffered a black and blue left eye from the goggles he was wearing with his helmet.

He could have died if not for the helmet and eye protection, experts say.
