SO FAR, SUMMER IS 2ND COOLEST ON RECORD

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009 -- 11:43 AM

This summer is shaping to be one of the coolest on record over much of central Wisconsin.

"Well, we're stuck in what we'd normally describe as a fall pattern," explains Todd Rieck with the National Weather Service in La Crosse, "under northwest flow loft, keeping a lot of cool air coming over us, while preventing those nice surges of warm, moist summer-like air from working itself over the Upper Mississippi River Valley."

So, meteorologist Todd Rieck with the National Weather Service in La Crosse says we can blame Canada for this weather.

Data indicates this could be the 2nd coolest on record in our area.

"It's been quite chilly. So far, to-date, Neillsville's (average temperature) has been right around 61-degrees," he explains. "The all-time record, for full summer, is 60, and that was back in the chilly 1998 summer."

And Rieck says the extended forecast is looking seasonably cool? in fact, the long range forecast, indicates the rest of summer will probably be below normal.

However, we could be rewarded with a mild winter, as El Nino appears to be forming in the Pacific.
