CARPFEST COMING SATURDAY
Tuesday, July 14th, 2009 -- 2:02 PM
The Hatfield Sportsman?s Club is getting ready for their annual carp contest.Carpfest will be held this Saturday, with anglers out on Lake Arbutus from midnight to 4 p.m.
"The reason we have this is three-fold," says Jerry Opelt, one of the organizers, "to reduce the population Lake Arbutus, to raise money for club activities and third, to have a good time, have fun."
This is the 7th annual event. They usually rid the lake of over one-thousand pesky carp, and some of them are big lunkers.
"We're giving prizes for the most carp, the longest carp, the 2nd most carp, the 3rd most carp and the 4th most carp. The prize money (for longest carp) has usually gone to one around the 3-foot range," Opelt says.
And then, there?s Old Bugle Lips. A specially tagged fish, that's proven elusive.
"If anyone catches the carp with the tag, it's worth $200. Last year, the rumor was someone had it on the line, had it close enough to see the tag, and then lost the fish."
Sounds like a fish tale to us.
"Aren't they all fish tales?" Opelt counters.
