WOLF ALERT IN CLARK COUNTY
Monday, July 13th, 2009 -- 10:18 AM
Two Clark County hunting dogs were killed by wolves in less than a week. The DNR says the first kill occurred on July 4th near Hatfield. Wildlife Services verified that wolves had killed a Walker Hound in southwest Clark County while bear dog training. The pack is believed to be the Brushy Ridge Pack and this is the first report of any depredations on domestic animals by this pack.
On July 8th, wolves killed a 5-year old bluetick female in the Eau Claire River Pack in western Clark County, just west of Rock Dam.
All hunters training dogs are urged to be aware of the caution areas shown on the map and to DNR website while training dogs within this site.
Adrian Wydeven, DNR mammalian ecologist, said wolves have pups in rendezvous sites at this time of the year, and it is probable they were protecting their young. Hunters may train dogs by pursuing bear from July 1 to August 31 each year. No more than six dogs may be used in any one training exercise and the dogs cannot kill any bear or other animals during the pursuit.
